MOVIE MONDAY

Easter Monday

It’s been 40 years since the first solo around the world sailing race. Now, from the maker of the incredible Touching The Void this retelling of the race, the unusual characters attracted by the challenge, and particularly Donald Crowhurst’s story. He was an electronics inventor who hoped the race would prove out some of his inventions and win him the kind of esteem that Chichester had garnered for his solo circumnavigation a year earlier, in 1967. To say the least, the voyage did not go well – and has become one of the great stories of the canon of deep sea sailors’ stories. PG the official website

APPEARING SATURDAY MARCH 15TH at the Victoria Arts Connection:

Ulla Ryghe grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, where she also started her career in film and worked as Ingmar Bergman’s film editor during the 1960’s. In 1968 she packed her bags, becoming a voyager to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the East. Along the way her life brimmed with people, events and experiences, which are chronicled in her memoir “Travels in Wonderland” to be launched this March and featured at the PFB Group Book Launch event on Sunday March 16th. The book reveals a rare account of working with Bergman as well as the NFB in Montreal. She now lives in Victoria, B.C.

MOVIE MONDAY

Reservation Soldiers – Lisa Jackson, 2007, 72 min
plus Being Innu – Catherine Mullins, 2007, 48 min
Here are a couple of new independent Canadian films that explore the problems faced by young people who live in remote aboriginal communities.

Being Innu takes an unvarnished look at life in the village of Sheshatshiu, Labrador. Six savvy, gutsy young people talk to Montreal filmmaker Catherine Mullins about addiction, suicide, lack of jobs, hopelessness. How did it get this way and how can it change? The countryside glows with breathtaking cinematography.

Reservation Soldiers takes a close look at the complex relationship between the Canadian Forces and First Nations youth, following several young Western Canadian youth through the Strong Eagle boot camp process. The military have pushed their recruitment drive into high gear, and native youth represent the perfect untapped resource. Why are these teens so keen to participate? What options are there? You’ll be surprised at the conclusions.

Two excellent films by very involved filmmakers. I’m pleased to bring filmmakers Catherine Mullins (by phone) and Vancouver’s Lisa Jackson together for a discussion about their provocative films on this perplexing subject.  Rated: Pg language
