MOVIE MONDAY
Saturday, April 11th at 7:30pm.
Petals
Admission by Donation

Petals  addresses the cultural, political, emotional and historical impacts on our perceptions of the vulva through a photography project aimed at exploring the  modern emotional responses to an aspect of life that was once worshipped.
The new, improved version of this film has benefitted from enthusiastic  audience responses and feedback from previous Victoria screenings- including the first year of Victoria’s Erotic Arts Fest, where it garnered the audience
favorite award at only 10 minutes in length.  After much encouragement,  Petals became a feature length project, and then tailored down to a one hour film which screened as part of Victoria’s Arts Symposium to much acclaim.

Monday, April 14, 6:30pm
Killer of Sheep, 1977, 83 min

This incredible film was first seen launched 1977, but 30 years later emerged re-edited, remastered, and beautifully presented in this Criterion Collection special edition. Long revered as an American masterpiece, Killer of Sheep is a powerful slice-of-life drama about Black society in Watts in the 70’s, grittily and artfully observed. Beautifully filmed black and white, in an almost documentary style with great sound track, originally produced for under $10,000, it delivers an intimate portrait of a conflicted family man, who by the way works in an abattoir. Don’t be put off by the title!

MOVIE MONDAY

6:30 Monday 31 March 2008
Helvetica, 2007, 140 min

These days everybody is a desktop publisher and is choosing fonts to express themselves. Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type. Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day.
