The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is looking for  projectionists for
May 29-Sept 7, 3.5 hrs a day for the exhibit:

Althea Thauberger:  Chelsea Girls

In the original work, episodes took place within New York’s Chelsea Hotel.  Thauberger’s homage follows the original in format and construction, but addresses more urgent contemporary themes, inviting the performers themselves to contribute content of political, social, or personal importance.  Chelsea Girls is a commissioned project created especially for the Art Gallery during the artists’ residency this spring; the project is presented in conjunction with Andy Warhol: Larger than Life.

The Art Gallery is looking for a projectionist for the daily screenings at 11am and 1pm from May 29th to September 7. The shift is 3.5hrs a day at $16/hr, 7 days a week.

KCTS9 accepting films for About Us, a local and independent film series.

Deadline for submissions is June 30, 2008.

“About Us is an independent filmmaker showcase highlighting topics and experiences that are distinctive to our region. The collection of films in the series represents a range of work that includes documentaries, historical pieces and even a comical look at one of this region’s more famous creatures.

It is the local spirit and nature of these films that unites them as a series. The stories are home grown and the films ‘hand-made,’ each coming from independent filmmakers with a personal connection to our region. These are local stories that would not normally find their way to a television audience, and it is the unique, individual touch of the filmmaker that brings forward the relevance of each subject. These are stories about our region and about our communities. These are stories about us, from filmmakers who know us better than anyone else.”

Althea Thauberger:  Chelsea Girls

Using Andy Warhol’s 1966 film, Chelsea Girls as a conceptual starting point, Vancouver based artist Althea Thauberger creates a film collaboration with the residents of a Victoria apartment building.

MOVIE MONDAY
6:30 Monday 26 May 2008
Mystic Ball, 2006, 83 min

“Passion suffuses every moment of Mystic Ball, an uplifting documentary about one man’s physical and spiritual quest. The film resists easy categorization – it’s simultaneously a thrilling sports movie, an insightful journey to a new world, and a lyrical personal story.

Mystic Ball follows Greg Hamilton, the Canadian filmmaker, deep into the ancient and little-known culture of Myanmar and its traditional sport, chinlone. Like the film, chinlone is hard to define. It’s a team sport without an opposing team, part dance, part meditation. There is no competition, no winners and no losers. The game is back-breakingly difficult, yet is played by almost all Burmese, from young children to octogenarians.

The film follows Greg’s transformation from outsider obsessed with learning chinlone to accomplished teammate of the masters of the game. But sport is only one aspect of his journey. Through chinlone, Greg discovers things he didn’t even know he was looking for: family, community and love.”

Death At A Funeral, 2007, 90 min Victoria Day

“How badly can a funeral go? Here’s a light, slightly dark entertainment from “The Old Country” for the Victoria Holiday Monday. Dad passed away but left a secret. A few squabbling children, relatives, and friends gather – add past romantic interests of several of the above, anxieties, jealousies, a little blackmail – add a sprinkling of hallucinogens – and you’ve got yourselves a good ole time.”

Finding Normal, 2007, 75 min

“Here’s a film that I think all of us in Victoria who are trying to find answers to the complex problems of addiction and what recovery might look like, should see. “This mentor run program has about a 70 percent success rate, often with people who have failed multiple times in recovery.” “…a thoroughly engrossing documentary by Brian Lindstrom about a group of Portland drug addicts and their rehab counselors trying day-by-day to keep.
Brian Lindstromthemselves clean, sober and together. The film is raw and real, filled with undeniable moments of pain and elation and human personality. It’s impossible to imagine a more honest look at this all-too-common world….”

We’ll have the filmmaker Brian Lindstrom and several of the mentors with us by phone from Portland to discuss the subject with the audience.

Pharis from Outlaw Social will perform two songs on the theme that will set the mood for the evening.

N.V.A.P will not inform the artist of the new location of their video, however, the artist’s contact information will be provided to the receiver. Contact is not necessary. N.V.A.P requests that receivers refrain from asking the artist for a bio, C.V. or statement in relation to the N.V.A.P video screening. Senders should not expect the return of their work. N.V.A.P is for video art senders
and receivers in  Canada only. Payments for N.V.A.P’s services are encouraged, but not necessary. For additional information contact: videoartport@gmail.com.
