Victoria: Site UnScene

Site UnScene is an exhibition that draws attention to aspects of Victoria that we don’t usually see in the tourist brochures. ‘Sites Unscene’ could encompass anything from unusual viewpoints of city streets to odd objects found in an urban environment—the main stipulation is that the location of the photograph and/or video be limited to Victoria and its environs.

MOVIE MONDAY

BC Day – For B.C.’s 150 – B.C. Boomer Special Event!, 70 min

“First we’ll visit the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s in B.C. when cigarettes and sun tanning and aimless driving vacations were good things…. We’ll visit the Fraser Valley and Okanagan with two campy 12-15 minute, tourist-attracting, Government made docs called Evergreen Playland presented by B.C. archivist Dennis J. Duffy.

Then,  we’ll see The Trips Festival and 1967 Easter Stanley Park “Be In”. As well, psychedelic music with the likes of Gerry Garcia and Janis Joplin bringing the Devil’s music to Vancouver. And an amazing interview with Mayor Tom Campbell taking a firm stand on “those people”. Our guide, Stan Fox, who worked for CBC at the time but who seems to have “gone over to the other side”, was in Vancouver and ventured to the mecca, Haight-Ashbury, documenting the phenomena with a sympathetic camera. “

MOVIE MONDAY

6:30 pm Monday 28 July 2008
Garbage Warrior, 86 min, 2007

“This brilliant doc could just change the world. That’s the ambition of the protagonist who gave up his architect license to build ‘green’ housing out of garbage – all the good stuff we’re so busy throwing in dumps. Heroically battling with bureaucracies, technical hitches in his off-the-grid subdivision in New Mexico, and heading for the eye of hurricane and tsunami wracked communities to put his ideas to work, our man is undeterred, full of innovation and passion.”  Rated Pg

MOVIE MONDAY

6:30 pm Monday 21 July 2008
The Tracy Fragments, 2007, 77 min

“This novel film, the latest from Bruce MacDonald, Canada’s ‘bad boy’ filmmaker, features the breakout Maritime actor, Ellen Page (Juno, Marion Bridge), as a troubled teen on a quest to find her little brother – who she has hypnotized to act like a dog. .. The sometimes multi-screen format gives an impression of the fragmented experience of her difficult world.”

Featuring a discussion with Director Bruce MacDonald by phone (from Toronto), who will talk about its making and the novel opportunity he gave fans to ‘un-fragment’ it to compete for a prize for best result. Rated R.

REQUESTS- OTHER ARTS AND VIDEO/FILM CENTRES

Cineworks Media Arts Commission
Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society would like to invite Canadian mid-career and established artists to submit proposals for an exhibition exploring the dynamic screen of contemporary cinema. Expanded cinema, new-media and experimental works will be given preference.

Gilles Deleuze, in his Cinema 1, poses the question “what is cinema?” This investigation has been complicated by our modern condition of the increased rate at which we receive and filter information everyday; the proliferation of screens–personal, portable and public; commercial cinema and advertising; and invisible networks of data transmission. The screen has moved out of the theatre and become a fluid entity. How have the temporal and spatial differences of viewing moving images in the theatre, gallery, at home or in the urban environment affected our experience of cinema? Cineworks is seeking proposals for works that will delve into our relationship with dynamic screens, analyzing their psychological and practical consequences on film production and consumption. According to Deleuze, the cinematic eye allows us to see and think in new ways. How has contemporary cinema shaped our perceptions? Considering that we constantly encounter screens in our mediated culture, how is it that we interact with them?

Upcoming Canadian films:

My Winnipeg

Legendary director Guy Maddin’s personal portrait of his hometown, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Told poetically, MY WINNIPEG weaves together the past, present, and future. Maddin revisits his childhood (through a young Guy Maddin played by Darcy Fehr) and relationship with this sleepy, snowy town, complete with hockey arenas, history footnotes and fractured visuals. The film, shot in black and white, combines stock archival footage (including private home videos) with some new freshly shot material. It is narrated by Guy Maddin himself.

Now in theatres: The Stone Angel, Fugitive Pieces
