This Sunday! Lightstruck- Cinematic Photogram workshop with Kerry Laitala
Presented by The Antimatter Film Festival, MediaNet and Cinevic

Sunday, September 28, 12 noon at Cinevic, 2022 Douglas St.

This five-hour workshop explores the process of making photograms directly onto 35mm film, creating hand-exposed cinema. Materials could include, but should not be limited to: feathers, buttons, shells, sequins, lace, “Letraset” letters, symbols and numbers, (rub on) images printed onto acetate, painted fi lm, anything graphically or texturally interesting or symbolically meaningful, etc. The film stock is negative, so remember to bring things that you think will render well in this form. You will also need to supply a small flashlight.

MOVIE MONDAY

Movie Monday 6:30 29 September 2008
Sybil, 1976, 198 min
“Here’s a real life story, brilliantly told that explores dissociative disorder, sometimes called multiple personality disorder. It’s about a survivor of early childhood abuse that, as a young teacher, dissociates into 16 distinct personalities. Mostly it’s about a healing relationship between patient (Sally Fields) and therapist (Joanne Woodward). Many people know of this story through the hair-raising book, Sybil, (1973). The film (1976) was written by Stewart Stern who thoroughly researched and rewrote the story from original transcripts and interviews with the therapist. It’s 198 minute long but totally captivating. The crisp 30 year Anniversary Collectors Edition DVD has extras such as interviews with the makers, actors, and examples “Sybil’s” own art. (Yo Video has it)
R some disturbing scenes – but you’ll surely find this film and discussion a rich experience. Bruces’ comments on the film and the real Sybil

Movie Monday is a free event, every Monday in Victoria, B.C.
Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices

Hijacked Future – Who Controls the Seed Controls the Food

Concerned about Food Security and Global Warming? Come to the film screening of Hijacked Future, a new and very insightful documentary produced and directed by Victoria filmmaker David Springbett, with an original musical score by Victoria composer Tobin Stokes at Camas Books, 2590 Quadra St (at Kings) on Friday, September 19th at 7:00 p.m.

Admission is by donation. A solutions based discussion will follow this revealing and hopeful film.

The documentary looks at the increasingly fragile base of our North American industrial food system in order to bring all of us consumers of food to a better understanding of just what’s at stake with our daily bread. It asks us to question the wisdom of a system precariously based on oil and corporate seeds while we’re at the same time witnessing the impact of climate change.

MOVIE MONDAY

6:30 pm Monday 22 September 2008

Thank You For Smoking, 2005, 92 min
& Say No To Big Tobacco Co, 2007, 90 min

“Why are people who struggle with mental illness particularly vulnerable to nicotine addiction? Movie Monday presents Thank You For Smoking with a short made by EMP RN Joan O’Connor who is charged with the Smoking Reduction and Cessation Program for the EMP Psychiatric Day Hospital. Her music video ‘Just Say No to Big Tobacco Co’ will be presented by members of her group who are helping each other, and modelling, kicking the habit.

The feature is a fiercely satirical and funny look at today’s “culture of spin” that perpetuates this unhealthy habit. The hero is Nick Naylor, chief spokesman for Big Tobacco, who makes his living defending the rights of smokers and cigarette makers in today’s neo-puritanical society. Directed by Canada’s bright young filmmaker, Jason Reitman (Juno). R for language and some sexual content.”

“‘ Nearly half of all cigarettes sold are smoked by people who have a mental disorder, and smoking substantially reduces the effectiveness of many medications prescribed to treat mental illness. As more Americans quit, continued smoking is becoming a marker for other substance addictions and/or mental illness.’”

Movie Monday is a free event, every Monday in Victoria, B.C.
Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices

Lightstruck- Cinematic Photogram workshop with Kerry Laitala

Presented by The Antimatter Film Festival, MediaNet and Cinevic

Sunday, September 28, 12 noon at Cinevic, 2022 Douglas St.

This five-hour workshop explores the process of making photograms directly onto 35mm film, creating hand-exposed cinema. We will place objects and material directly onto the film and cast their shadows with light. This intimate tactility ignites the hand/mind continuum into a direct interplay free fromordinary cinematic constraints.

Participants will need to scavenge materials for this workshop. Anything transparent, translucent and opaque may be used to form latent shadowgraphic traces which will be brought to life through hand-processing.
