Movie Monday
Friday, 28 November 2008
Desert Bus

Starting Friday 6pm Nov 28 Desert Bus will be hitting the road again. Same dreary road, same boring game, the same sparky crew as last year’s.

The idea is to take pledges from a www audience as an incentive to tortuously keep the crew on the road playing what Penn and Teller designed to be the “most boring video in the world”, their response to criticism that video games are getting youth too hyper and violent. The LRR crew took the formula and spun it into a phenomena, keeping the bus on the road for 4 1/2 days and raising almost $23,000 for the charity Child’s Play!

It turned into the most entertaining reality TV ever (especially if you’re a parent and can check in at 3 am and see what your 25 year old son is doing). Broadcasting round the clock a window of the game screen and another window of the players and company playing, telling jokes, living large the gamer’s life, riveted to their easy chair cockpit for 4 hour shifts. The big thing was the interactive component: from their Victoria living room answering emails and calls from around the world (Penn and Teller called in several times – and sent donation and food!) For an extra $10-$100 donation they would play upside down, or sing a song or worse. It was a group of nerdy young people you wanted to be part of, so cool were they.

Cunningly, the donation amount starts innocently small – starts at a dollar per hour – and ramps up by 7% each hour, so amazingly, as you can see (jpg 444), by the end of the run last year they were raising $1,600 an hour. They’re already up to $627.32 and committed to drive for 56 hours and haven’t pulled onto the dreary road from Tucson to Vegas yet!

According to Paul Saunders, one of the founding members of LoadingReadyRun, “The mixture of generosity and spite is a really powerful thing.”

Enjoy the power, make them suffer! Participate in Desert Bus! View the whole story. B (full disclosure – proud dad of Paul)

LaSaM presents
Sonic Whisper

sounds from the periphery in gently audible turbulence

Saturday, November 29, 2008
8:00pm – 10:00pm
Grace Lutheran Church
1273 Fort Street
Victoria, BC
$10 / $8 Students and Seniors

Kristy Farkas; prepared piano, melodica, bells, music box, gadgets
Tina Pearson; accordion, voiced flute, bowls, gadgets
Chris Reiche; prepared piano, DX7, toy pianos, bowls, gadgets

Sonic Whisper is a concert for the approaching season of dark and mystery, when non-visual senses are heightened. Sonic Whisper takes meaning partially from the ideas expressed about the practice of Horse Whispering. Sonic Whispering is the practice of listening for the sounds, and the spaces between gestures, that come about by using instruments and gadgets in ways they were not intended. By listening for signals from the sonic landscape around us, listening for texture and nuance, and for obscure, evocative and delicate sounds that occur in a place not usually attended to in expressive or formal music, the performers unearth a narrative of sonic whisperings that shift, shimmer and remember.

http://www.myspace.com/lasammusic
Email:  lasammusic@gmail.com

LaSaM is a collective of composer-performers located in and around Victoria, BC, Canada. Its first concert, Resonant Chambers (January 2008), took inspiration from Alvin Lucier’s work “Chambers”, offering a delicate yet powerful soundspace created with the interrelationships between real and virtual sonic architecture, memory, time, amplification and an instrumentation of prepared piano, voices, flute, clarinet, bowls, gongs and bells. The concert was called “exquisite”, beautiful”, “brilliant” and “the best  electroacoustic concert in Victoria in years” by its audience. Resonant Chambers was a collaboration between founding members of LaSaM: Andy Schloss, Chris Reiche, Tina Pearson, Kirk McNally and Cathy Lewis, with computer programs by David Jaffe, and quotations from the work of John Cage.

Suburbia, and all its promises, has become a lifestyle predicated on the dwindling availability of cheap and abundant oil.
In Escape from Suburbia, Canadian director Gregory Greene (The End of Suburbia, 2004)
introduces three engaging characters and a small town who move us from the realm of theory to the real world
where an emerging movement of citizen’s groups is confronting our addiction to oil with vision and courage.
This film is a wake-up call that challenges the illusion of never-ending growth and examines alternatives for a more sustainable society in the 21st century and beyond.

Cracked Not Broken, 2007, 52 min

Dr Gabor Maté will be our guest to talk about his ground breaking book on addiction, In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction, and to share thoughts on the Toronto film Cracked Not Broken.

“Get a glimpse into the harsh reality and chaotic lifestyle of drug addiction. This film will force you to examine all of your stereotypes about the addicted”

Cracked Not Broken opens a disturbing window on the life of Lisa, a 37-year-old crack-cocaine addict and estranged mother of one who prostitutes herself to fuel her costly drug habit. Although she grew up in an upper middle-class family, went to the right schools and had the right friends, something went terribly wrong. Filmed almost entirely in the Toronto hotel room she lives in and works out of, Cracked Not Broken portrays a highly intelligent, vivacious, articulate and hyperactive woman juggling cell phone and drug paraphernalia with equal dexterity while talking with incredible frankness to filmmaker Paul Perrier – the husband of one of Lisa’s oldest friends – about the struggles of being in “the game” and her quest for redemption. Cracked Not Broken chronicles Lisa’s faltering steps toward recovery and her early efforts to educate others about the illness of addiction. Pg13

Doors open at 5.30pm

Suburbia, and all its promises, has become a lifestyle predicated on the dwindling availability of cheap and abundant oil.
In Escape from Suburbia, Canadian director Gregory Greene (The End of Suburbia, 2004)
introduces three engaging characters and a small town who move us from the realm of theory to the real world
where an emerging movement of citizen’s groups is confronting our addiction to oil with vision and courage.
This film is a wake-up call that challenges the illusion of never-ending growth and examines alternatives for a more sustainable society in the 21st century and beyond.
