2009 Underground Aboriginal Art Crawl

MediaNet is looking for film and video works for the Second Annual Underground Aboriginal Art Crawl, titled “The Old Guard is Dead.”

Last year, eleven local Aboriginal artists filled three of the city’s artist run centres with a variety of performances and works. This year, MediaNet will contribute with a showcase of film and video works. The gallery walk will take place on March 13. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2009.

The opening reception for Assume Nothing: New Social Practice is Tonight (January 29) begining at 7:30pm. This is a great time to see the exhibition, meet many of the artists, and enjoy food and refreshments.

MediaNet will be participating in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s exhibition, Assume Nothing, New Social Practice.
We invite filmmakers to produce short film and video works (10 min max.) introducing interesting people from their lives and communities. The work may be in a documentary format, but can also encompass experimental elements. There are many ways to tell a person’s story: drawings, photographs and visual poetry are some of many examples.
The screening is inspired by the work of Harrell Fletcher, whose website, Some People, has become an opportunity for individuals to talk about someone important in their lives.

Independent Media Artists Competition for Short Films & Videos

The CACGV invites submissions for our Practicing Artist Awards for 2009 in Media Art.

$1000 will be awarded in each category of Personal Expression and Experimental Expression. Three awards of merit and two of honourable mention in each category.
Personal Expression may include personal documentary, family, or impressionistic works.
Experimental Expression may include works which push the boundaries of technology, form or substance

1. Limited to works 15 minutes or less in duration. Must be submitted in DVD or CD only (installation proposals may be submitted in pdf format on DVD or CD
2. Must have been produced within the last three years.
3. Not eligible: corporate or sponsored films/videos, music videos, programs slated for broadcast or previously broadcast on television.
4. Entrants are limited to directors who are residents of the CRD.
Entires must include:
1. A DVD (NTSC only) copy of your work.
2. A one-page resume outlining your training and any current professional experience, noting any previously created works. Please insure your contact information is current and complete.
3. Three photos from the work and a one-paragraph description of the work.

Deadline for submissions: March 15, 2009

Artist Jeroen Witvliet is looking for people who are athletic, flexible and have experience with dance or movement orientated performance for an endurance piece to be recorded onto video.
Looking for someone who is willing to stumble/fall to the point of exhaustion.
The same movements, stumbling / falling will have to be repeated over and over again.
Single takes for video could be up to 20 minutes or more if one is capable of doing so.
The finished piece will be shown in ( public ) art galleries.

Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity June 5-14.

Communication | Environment is an exhibition that provides artists the opportunity to mediate between interior and exterior space and lend perception to the imperceptible elements of communication. Artworks by Canadian and international artists will transform the thoroughfares of Toronto’s downtown core and alter perceptions as unsuspecting viewers traverse their familiar environs.

The Luminato Box is a temporary experimental gallery extending the theme of communication that will be constructed in Sam Pollock Square, Brookfield Place. In this simple white room, a new artist or collective will be presented each day of the festival (ten artists over the ten days of Luminato). Participating artists will be selected by the Luminato curatorial team led by Robert VanderBerg, Associate Producer, Visual Arts and Public Installations, and will receive $1,000 towards the production of the artwork.

MediaNet is looking for film and video works for the Second Annual Underground Aboriginal Art Crawl, titled “The Old Guard is Dead.”

Last year, eleven local Aboriginal artists filled three of the city’s artist run centres with a variety of performances and works. This year, MediaNet will contribute with a showcase of film and video works. The gallery walk will take place on March 13. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2009.

The CACGV invites submissions for our Practicing Artist Awards for 2009 in Media Art.

$1000 will be awarded in each category of Personal Expression and Experimental Expression. Three awards of merit and two of honourable mention in each category.
Personal Expression may include personal documentary, family, or impressionistic works.
Experimental Expression may include works which push the boundaries of technology, form or substance

1. Limited to works 15 minutes or less in duration. Must be submitted in DVD or CD only (installation proposals may be submitted in pdf format on DVD or CD
2. Must have been produced within the last three years.
3. Not eligible: corporate or sponsored films/videos, music videos, programs slated for broadcast or previously broadcast on television.
4. Entrants are limited to directors who are residents of the CRD.
Entires must include:
1. A DVD (NTSC only) copy of your work.
2. A one-page resume outlining your training and any current professional experience, noting any previously created works. Please insure your contact information is current and complete.

Awareness Film Night Weds. Jan. 14th “Jerusalem, The East Side Story” – The reality on the ground of the Israeli Occupation of Palestine
Edward Milne Community School theatre at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation.

On January 14th Awareness Film Night will provide an opportunity to learn more about the urgent developments in Israel/Palestine, followed by a brief talk and question session with Victoria activist Theresa Wolfwood who has recently returned from Palestine.

This film was produced and directed by highly acclaimed film director and human rights activist Mohammed Alatar who has said: “I did not make the film so that people would like it, because there is nothing to like in military occupation, but rather I hope and pray that people will wake up to today’s bitter reality in the historic city of Jerusalem and do what it takes to bring peace to this troubled city.”

Independent Media Artists Competition for Short Films & Videos

The CACGV invites submissions for our Practicing Artist Awards for 2009 in Media Art.

$1000 will be awarded in each category of Personal Expression and Experimental Expression. Three awards of merit and two of honourable mention in each category.
Personal Expression may include personal documentary, family, or impressionistic works.
Experimental Expression may include works which push the boundaries of technology, form or substance

1. Limited to works 15 minutes or less in duration. Must be submitted in DVD or CD only (installation proposals may be submitted in pdf format on DVD or CD
2. Must have been produced within the last three years.
3. Not eligible: corporate or sponsored films/videos, music videos, programs slated for broadcast or previously broadcast on television.
4. Entrants are limited to directors who are residents of the CRD.
Entires must include:
1. A DVD (NTSC only) copy of your work.
2. A one-page resume outlining your training and any current professional experience, noting any previously created works. Please insure your contact information is current and complete.
3. Three photos from the work and a one-paragraph description of the work.

Deadline for submissions: March 15, 2009

The Executive Director implements and ensures delivery of the strategic mandate of the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival (“Reel Asian”), Canada’s premier pan-Asian film festival. Reel Asian will be entering its 13th year in November 2009.
