1. MediaNet workshops

ACTIVATE!

September 6 – October 6. Screening 9th September

Cost $150

1) Activate is a video documentary production program for people interested in creating and using video to express their point of view on issues they find important. No previous video or filmmaking experience is necessary. However, the program is designed to add valuable experiece and resources to filmmakers with a variety of experience. Each participant or team will be write, shoot and edit a short documentary about an issue of their choice.

Participants will have access to MediaNet equipment and editing facilities as well as ongoing production mentorship. ACTIVATE participants may attend workshops on topics such as crowdfunding, the Activist Video workshop with Richard Boyce, ” Shooting for the Edit” workshop with Anna Malkin, Documentary Cinematography with Cyrus Block, intro to iMovie, Final Cut X and/or Premier Pro with Kirk Schwartz and to a variety of talks and seminars with documentary industry professionals. As well, you will have the opportunity to participate in a facilitated day long story editing workshop with your peers in order to refine and create your most effective video

Cost of the program is $150 per team or individual plus $50 for each additional participating team member (of course, you can get as many people as you want to help with your project but only participating team members may attend the workshops without additional charge)

The program will run over 4 weeks, culminating in a public screening of the works produced. Previous screenings have been held at the Victoria Event Centre in the cabaret style of “Open Cinema”.

Camus Books PreEvent – Maximum Tolerated Dose – in co-operation with Camus Books -Maximum Tolerated Dose is the first feature-length documentary by Decipher Films. The film charts the lives of both humans and non-humans who have experienced animal testing first-hand, with hauntingly honest testimony of scientists and lab technicians whose ethics demanded they choose a different path, as well as the simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of animals who have seen both sides of the cage.

Anarchist Book Fair – Fernwood 11:30 to 1:30 – Richard Boyce – Activist Video Workshop
Richard Boyce is an award winning filmmaker, activist and documentarian. From Clayquot Sound to the African dessert to the courtroom, he has used video to persuade, inspire and to hold politician’s feet to the fire using their own words and actions captured on video. This workshop will be held in conjunction with the Anarchist Book Fair.

This unique workshop by longtime editor and MN member Anna Malkin will teach you how to plan your shoot with editing in mind thereby saving you time and frustration and reshoots in your post production work flow.

Join filmmaker & media activist Ian MacKenzie (Occupy Love) as he demystifies the world of crowdfunding and the specific strategies that will help you tap into the revolution. Ian has directly raised over $80K through crowdfunding and has consulted on many others projects, from $5K-$150K.

Judy has won many awards for her documentaries about Human Rights. Early in her career, at CBC’s ‘the fifth estate’, she documented the abuses of Dictators in Chile, Argentina and Guatemala. Then, working from England, (BBC, ITV and C4), she made films including ‘The Hidden Holocaust’ (Guatemala), ‘In Search of the Assassin’ (Central America’). Her film ‘They Shoot Children, Don’t They?’ (Guatemala), about street children murdered by the police, resulted in irate viewers writing in such numbers to the BBC, Amnesty International and the Guatemalan Government that policemen were finally convicted.

Monday 17 Sept to Sunday 7 Oct Production assistance and mentoring. You will have access to MediaNet assets and help from MN technical director Kirk Schwartz as well as advice and mentorship from a variety of MN member
