SCREENINGS
Movie Monday
6:30 pm Monday 3 Dec 2012
Prince of Broadway, 2008, 100 min
A find from a filmmaker I met at VIFF, Prince of Broadway is the story of Lucky and Levon, two men whose lives converge in the underbelly of New York’s wholesale fashion district. Lucky, a street smart illegal immigrant from Ghana, makes ends meet by soliciting shoppers on the street with knock-off brand merchandise. Levon, an Armenian-Lebanese immigrant, operates an illegal storefront with a concealed back room where counterfeit goods are showcased to interested shoppers. Lucky’s world is suddenly turned upside down when a child is thrust into his life by a past girlfriend who insists the toddler is his son. It’s part comedy, part drama, very authentic, and made with passion on an indie budget. We’ll show a ‘making of’ doc that shows how this terrific film was birthed. R language review ~ more
His new, impressive film, Starlet, with a debut staring roll by Papa Hemmingway’s granddaughter Gree, screened at VIFF in September.
cast: Prince Adu, Karren Karagulian, Aiden Noesi, Keyali Mayaga, Kat Sanchez

Smokin’ Fish Movie, 81 min, 2011
Cory Mann is a quirky Tlingit businessman hustling to make a dollar in Juneau Alaska. He gets hungry for smoked salmon, nostalgic for his childhood, and decides to spend a summer smoking fish at his family’s traditional fish camp. The unusual story of his life and the untold history of his people interweave with the process of preparing traditional food as he struggles to pay his bills, keep the IRS off his back, and keep his business afloat. By turns tragic, bizarre, or just plain ridiculous, Smokin’ Fish, tells the story of one man’s attempts to navigate the messy zone of collision between the modern world and an ancient culture. Pg13 review ~ more.
Hopefully Cory Mann will be with us to present his story.
Plus short: Uninterrupted ( 4 min ) Nettie Wild’s short about our Adams salmon run.
Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Admission by donation! Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices. See: http://islandnet.com/mm/
