Movie Monday

6:30 pm Monday 23 March 2009
The World’s Fastest Indian, 2005, 127 min

This story is a film based on the legendary New Zealand speed bike racer Burt Munro and his highly modified Indian ‘Scout’ motorcycle. Munro set numerous land speed records for motorcycles with engines less than 1000 cc at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah in the late 1950s and into the 1960s. Many of his records still stand to this day. Burt’s a real guy. Anthony Hopkins plays him in this biopic, apparently very true to his gregarious, resourceful self, and true to the odyssey Burt travelled to get to his Salt Flats destination from New Zealand with almost no money and threatening health problems. PG13

MEDIANET CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

MediaNet film screening at the AGGV, April 30, 2009

Deadline for film and video submissions, March 15, 2009

MediaNet will be participating in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s exhibition, Assume Nothing, New Social Practice.
We invite filmmakers to produce short film and video works (10 min max.) introducing interesting people from their lives and communities. The work may be in a documentary format, but can also encompass experimental elements. There are many ways to tell a person’s story: drawings, photographs and visual poetry are some of many examples.
The screening is inspired by the work of Harrell Fletcher, whose website, Some People, has become an opportunity for individuals to talk about someone important in their lives.

Movie Monday

6:30 pm Monday 9 March 2009
Bella Coola To Berlin, 2007, 48 min

With director Barbarah Hagar – including a short piece about making the film.

In 1885, a Norwegian artifact collector named Fillip Jacobsen traveled to our coast to find a group of Aboriginal dancers to perform in the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg and in other cities in Germany. Jacobsen met a group of nine Bella Coola (Nuxalk) men who were looking for work, and they took the job performing their traditional dances in Germany. Their contract required them to exhibit themselves before the public in the performance of “Indian games, the use of bows and arrows, singing and dancing, speaking and otherwise in showing the habits, manners and customs of the Indians” to the curious Europeans. This documentary tells the strange story of their year away, thoughtfully told, creatively reconstructed from archival documents, combined with present day interviews with German scholars, Nuxalk elders and cultural leaders. Presented by filmmaker Barbara Hager also director and producer of The New Canoe and director of her recent MM hit, Motown High.

Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson) was just diagnosed with a terminal illness. He should be in a hospital. He should be with his doting fiancée (Liane Balaban) and family. He should be dealing with the news.

But instead, all he wants is to go on a road trip – on a motorcycle no less.

In search of a profound experience, he rides from Toronto to Tofino, stopping at landmarks that are both iconic and idiosyncratic on his quest to find meaning in his life and for a chance to really live, even for just “One Week”.
