OPEN CINEMA

On Wednesday, January 19, OPEN CINEMA continues Season Eight with a screening of the documentary What’s on Your Plate.

This is the second screening in our “Cinema in Season: Celebration of Film, Food and Farming” series in partnership with Food Roots, and sponsored by Vancity.

What’s on Your Plate follows two eleven-year old city kids as they visit supermarkets, fast food chains, schoolyards and community supported agriculture, searching for their place in the food chain. Their conversations with farmers, activists and storekeepers lead them to form sophisticated and compassionate opinions about urban sustainability, inspiring hope and activism.

We hope to screen the film in schools after the event on the 19th. We invite teachers, parents and students who are interested in screening this film in their schools to contact us.

We hope to see you in January!

Screenings and Events

Movie Monday

6:30 pm Monday 20 December 2010

The Trotsky, 2009, 120 min

Leon Bronstein is not your average Montreal West high school student. For one thing, none of his peers can claim to be the reincarnation of early 20th century Soviet iconoclast and Red Army hero, Leon Trotsky. When his father sends Leon to public school as punishment for starting a hunger strike at Papa’s clothing factory, Leon quickly lends new meaning to the term ‘student union’ Jay Baruchel is terrific in this Canadian gem.

6:30 pm Monday 27 December 2010

Micmacs, 2009, 105 min

A new film by Amélie’s creator, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, that oddly places some very odd characters in the almost normal contemporary world. Outcasts trying to pull off a caper to have a couple of arms dealers get their comeuppance. Full of imaginative clockwork and colourful, overdrawn characters, Our gang relive the battle of David and Goliath, with all the imagination and fantasy of Buster Keaton

6:30 pm Monday 3 January 2011

Babies, 2010, 79 min

Four babies are born into four very different societies; in Namibia, Japan, Mongolia, and California, USA. This beautifully made film from French filmmakers has no voice-over (March Of The Penguin style), just joyfully captures on film the earliest stages of the journey of humanity. The contrasts and then similarities between each culture’s baby-rearing style are fascinating.

Movie Monday screens every Monday in Victoria, B.C. Admission is by donation.

Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices
