The next OPEN CINEMA will be held on Wednesday February 23

at the Victoria Event Centre, 1415 Broad St.

We will be screening the documentary The Economics of Happiness

The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions.

On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power.

At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies.

Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localization.

The film contains interviews with activists, philosophers, scholars and politicians from six continents.

The Annual South Island Regional Art Exhibition & Sale

Mary (Bethany Whitmore) is a lonely eight-year-old girl in Melbourne; randomly picking a name out of the New York phone book, she writes a letter to Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a middle-aged Jewish man with Asperger syndrome. So begins a decades-long correspondence (Mary eventually grows up to be voiced by Toni Collette) that will have deep resonant meaning for two souls whose lives are otherwise filled with meaningless and alienation.
