Coming Up at OPEN CINEMA

Our annual Earth Day fundraising event!

7pm, April 20 at the Victoria Event Centre- 1415 Broad St.

Suggested donation $15 -$55

Doors open at 5:30pm

We will be screening the documentary Powerful: Energy for Everyone. With recent discussions surrounding the use of

fossil fuels and nuclear energy, this topical film and event focuses on the possibilities of alternative energy sources.

About the film: From the far side of the ocean to his own backyard, filmmaker David Chernushenko embarks on a global journey to examine the

alternatives to the conventional energy system. Tackling the spin of the big energy lobby and, equally, dispelling the myths of a “green

utopia” envisioned by many, Powerful is a candid examination of what a sustainable future may actually look like. From amazing innovators,

eccentric eco-activists to average communities completely powered by renewable energy, David will begin to discover that the implications for

political, economic and democratic change are right here, on our very

doorsteps… or just above them. http://www.powerfulthemovie.com/

Featuring an after screening discussion with Filmmaker David Chernushenko (via skype), Donna Morton (First

Power) and more.

There will be a silent auction of goods and services from local businesses, door prizes, and food available for purchase, including Pizza by The Joint and goodies from Bubby Roses’ Bakery

Please bring your own zero waste coffee mug, napkin and spoon.

Hope to see you there!

Tokyo Sonata is a portrait of a seemingly ordinary Japanese family. The father who abruptly loses his job conceals the truth from his family; the eldest son in college hardly returns home; the youngest son furtively takes piano lessons without telling his parents; and the mother, who knows deep down that her role is to keep the family together, cannot find the will to do so. From the exterior, all is normal and the same. But, somehow, a single, unforeseeable chasm has appeared within the family, only to spread ever so quietly and quickly to disintegrate them.

Exit Through The Gift Shop, 2010, 87 min

Los Angeles based Frenchman Thierry Guetta gets the idea that he would like to film street artists in the process of creating their work. He even gets into the act by assisting them in creating the art. One of the artists that participates is the camera-shy Brit superstar activist/artist Banksy, who refuses to be shown on screen unless he is blacked out. Banksy convinces Thierry to use the footage to make a movie. Thierry is a lousy filmmaker, but he is an interesting character in an odd yet appealing way. Banksy makes a film about the filmmaker. Brilliant! R
