1. Message from the Executive Director

Dear MediaNet members and friends of MediaNet:

MediaNet’s 30th Birthday!!

It’s my pleasure to announce that on Dec 16th, 1981, MediaNet was

incorporated, and this December will mark 30 years of serving

independent film and video production and presentation in Victoria!

To celebrate we will be hosting a screening and party this fall, and

also launching a fundraising campaign.

Help us continue to support media artists

As you may know from newspaper reports, MediaNet unfortunately lost its Gaming funding this

past year.  As a consequence we are facing a budget deficit, but you can help.

1. If you are a MediaNet member already, you could renew your

      membership now.

2. If you are not a member and support the video services MediaNet offers,

you could become a Basic member for $30 a year.

3. Finally, you could make a donation to support

the purchase and maintenance of new equipment.

So, look for details of our 30th anniversary celebration in an upcoming newsletter. Thank

you very much.

Peter Sandmark

Executive Director

2. Public Domain

A video programme by SAW Video Media Art Centre

September 23, 7:30 pm, @ Deluge Contemporary Art

636 Yates Street

Public Domain originated as a video commissioning project of SAW Video, a media-art centre located in Ottawa. In 2009, seven artists were selected from a national call for proposals to create videos drawn from archival films and photographs held in the collection of Library and Archives Canada. Over the course of a year, SAW Video assisted the artists with the process of researching and collecting materials for use in their work. The completed commissioning project premiered in Ottawa on June 24, 2010. Public Domain will tour to a number of venues across Canada, the USA, and the UK in 2011-12.

Programme:

• Sara Angelucci (Toronto) – The Beauty Pageant News (9 min.)

• Maureen Bradley (Victoria) – Beyond the Pale (16 min.)

• Gennaro de Pasquale (Montreal) – Vortex (12 min.)

• Steve Reinke (Chicago/Toronto) – Not Torn (Asunder from the Very Start) (10 min.)

• Ryan Stec & Véronique Couillard (Ottawa) – Library and Archives Canada Public Domain

Ago Remixed Today (VCRS): 19752010 (3 min.)

• Suzan Vachon (Montreal) – chant [dans les muscules du chant] (23 min.)

Artist Maureen Bradley and Christopher Rohde (Programmer, SAW Video) will be in attendance.

The Most Dangerous Man In America: Daniel Ellsberg, 2011, 94 min

Following our theme from last Monday:

In the age of WikiLeaks, and following last week’s Phil Ochs film, this incredible film must be seen. Here’s a guy who 40 years ago, from the inside, unravelled the belief many of us had in US leaders. “The Most Dangerous Man in America is a comprehensive look at the release of the Pentagon Papers and the political firestorm that may have sealed Americans’ disenchantment with the war, and which certainly sealed the fate of the Nixon Administration. But the film is also an intensely intimate look into the conscience of a gifted and intelligent man who wrestled personally and professionally with what he came to see as the contradictions between American ideals and American power in Southeast Asia.” Pg13 (some scenes of Vietnam war) more or view a Film Description

The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom, 2011, 95 min

Set in 1976, It’s the story of Elizabeth , a geeky 11-year-old girl from the Prairies who is waiting desperately for puberty to strike when she finds out her family isn’t exactly what she thought it was. So Elizabeth does what any disillusioned preteen would do. After deciding that Dolly Parton must be her real mother, she gets all gussied up, boards her banana-seat bike and sets out in pursuit of the truth. Offbeat, sweet, very Canadian. Pg official site & trailer

Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Admission by donation! Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices
