6. AROUND TOWN

Making Films, Making a Living

Join us for a dynamic weekend workshop and brainstorm for the South Island’s filmmakers and digital storytellers.

These are turbulent times; and while our communities, our environment, and our economies need our talents more than ever,  an increasing number of us are just trying to make ends meet. We’re searching for answers when we’re not even sure what the questions are.

This climate demands working together in innovative ways; it calls for new combinations of tools, concepts, and partnerships; it encourages us to expand our understanding of the intricacy and context of today’s media climate; and in some cases it invites us to redefine our ideas of “profession” and “making a living”.

Our highly interactive sessions will be aimed at helping local filmmakers better navigate today’s changing media landscape, by tapping into Victoria’s most valuable resource: our collective talents and experience.

For more information, and to register, please go to:

Movie Monday

Heaven’s Heart, 2008, 92 min

Here’s a very grown up drama about fidelity. A happily married couple discovers just what kind of lasting implications a simple conversation can have after bringing up a taboo subject over dinner with friends and discovering a division they never knew existed. A discovery from the Vancouver Film Fest in 2009 that finally, and exclusively, finds it’s way to MM’s big screen. Pg13 Swedish w subtitles more and a review

6:30 pm Monday 26 Mar 2012

Water For Elephants, 2011, 120 min

A great, colourful, old fashioned yarn, they way they used to make them. With the exciting background of an old-style Big Top circus, an amazing elephant, and a terrific villain (Christoph Waltz), our protagonists (Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson) play out their star-crossed love story. The wonderful Hal Holbrook plays the framing older character looking back at his life, Titanic style. What’s not to like? Pg13official site and more

Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Admission by donation! Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices
