Movie Monday

6:30 pm Monday 16 Apr 2012

Mothers and Daughters, 2008, 85 min

This is the first of a trilogy of Vancouver-based filmmaker Carl Bessai’s pet projects, filmed on tiny budgets, collaborating with favourite actors and techs, exploring family relationships. In Mothers and Daughters, “Bessai’s sparkling ensemble cast breathes life into six unique and beguiling characters. Never descending to the maudlin, the actors pay tribute to the intricacies of these relationships while simultaneously celebrating the art of performance itself. The result is a trenchant exploration of several different facets of the mother-daughter connection – the way buttons are pushed, the way bonds are rebuilt – with clarity and quite a lot of courage.” R
