This summer at Uvic – FA 346 Avatars and Information Agents

a class taught by Doug Jarvis

Create an avatar, explore a virtual world, and then determine its fate!

Social media, online gaming, college and university, all require you to create some form of unique digital profile to participate in a virtual or information space. We create these avatars and information agents to act as our ‘second self’, a collection of identities that represent us in the multiple dimensions of digital culture.

This course is a practice-based lecture that critically engages the role that these virtual entities have in our lives. Through discussions, videos, lectures and computer-lab studio time we will explore and exercise the ongoing relationship we have with technology in the world. Each student will design and create an avatar, explore virtual environments and then, ultimately, determine your avatars fate!

Previous art and computer experience is not required but a curiosity about avatars and how they work will certainly help.

Times: June 7 – 29    10:30am – 12:20pm  MTWRF  in FA103

Journey to Kapasseni: A Refugee’s Gift, 2001, 52 min

& Return to Kapasseni, 2011, 30 min

An Evening Of Film And Song

In the late 1990s, two Mozambican refugees – who were recent Canadian citizens – returned to Africa to visit their home village of Kapasseni. They allied themselves with the Victoria Canada’s Gettin’ Higher Choir to improve conditions in the area. A heart lifting film, shot by Victorian Ben Fox, resulted – Journey to Kapasseni: A Refugee’s Gift. The choir to this day continues to raise money for Kapasseni and other projects. In the summer of 2011, Ben and choir leader Shivon Robinsong returned to Mozambique to witness over a decade’s worth changes to Kapasseni, as well as the influence of Kuwangisana on the larger region. Thanks again to Ben’s images and Bill Weaver’s production, this visit has become another film, Return to Kapasseni. We’ll hear some songs from some of the choir, show both films, and see Ben’s images in our gallery/lobby.

Wish Me Away, 2011, 76 min

Hosted by PFLAG for Anti Homophobia Day Wish Me Away tracks three years in the life of a very high profile country music star as she struggles to come out publicly as being gay. She has dug herself in so deep playing the heterosexual dream girl, with songs like “Your Woman Misses Her Man” and “Single White Female” She just might be your dream come true / A single white female / Is looking for a man like you, that she has to face up to a huge amount of public backlash at her betrayal of that myth. As well she’s a committed Christian. Her spiritual advisor sagely warns her, as she contemplates a very public coming out, that “there’s nobody quite as mean as people being mean for Jesus.” I saw it at VIFF and it captured my full attention for the full 2hr running time. Very high quality production and engrossing story. Pg13 review and the docs FaceBook page

Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Admission by donation! Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices
