and a book launch, hosted by MediaNet and Open Space.

On June 21 we will screen films and videos by Deirdre Logue from Toronto (who is the Artist in Residence at

Deirdre Logue Residency at Open Space

May 1-August 4

Deirdre Logue (Toronto, ON) is in Victoria this summer participating in a production residency and solo exhibition at Open Space in partnership with MediaNet. Logue will work from a temporary studio, located on site, for the next couple of months preparing for an exhibition of new and recent works.

During her time in Victoria, Logue will participate in the Representing the Personal Symposium hosted by MediaNet, June 21-22, and setup a satellite Feminist Art Gallery, a project that she co-directs with Allyson Mitchell. Logue and Mitchell are contributors to the international conference Civil Partnerships? Queer and Feminist Curating at the Tate Modern in London, UK, May 17-19. She will also serve as a mentor for MediaNet’s M.A.G.I.C. Lab workshop.

Logue is known for her critically engaged self-portraits and performance-based installations, which are infused with a keen sense of humour. Her works explore issues of queer, psychoanalytic, and feminist theory, employing experimental and minimalist production methods to challenge ideas of self-representation. Logue will continue her exploration of these themes in the context of Victoria’s cultural community and to share with us her experiences.  Please join us in welcoming her and be sure to drop by Open Space to introduce yourself.

The Iron Lady, 2011, 105 min

The Iron Lady is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world. Meryl Streep’s portrayal of a once great lady in her prime, latterly addled by dementia, is amazing, as the screenplay is sharp. Pg13

A Friend Indeed: The Bill Sackter Story, 2008, 90 min

** MM’s 19th Anniversary!! There’ll Be Cake! **

A Friend Indeed – The Bill Sackter Story is an inspiring new documentary showing how a forgotten man and an uncommon friendship shattered the world’s perceptions of people with disabilities. Bill Sackter’s life story was made famous by the award winning made-for-tv movie “Bill” (1981) starring Mickey Rooney as Bill, and Dennis Quaid as the young filmmaker Barry Morrow who had befriended Bill in 1972 and began filming their relationship and adventures.

After 44 years in an institution, and with some help from a few good friends, Bill’s life was transformed – as was everyone around him. With a harmonica, a warm cup of coffee and a positive embrace of life, the real Bill Sackter became an international hero for people with disabilities. It’s a story, that could have been a dead end, that gets better and better with each turn. You’ll love it. Pg

Watch this trailer and tell me this isn’t a perfect MM feature! I dare you! official site or view a trailer

Movies are shown on a 12′ screen in the Eric Martin Pavilion in the 1900 block of Fort St. Admission by donation! Pop & popcorn at ridiculously low prices
