Come and see new documentary films created by participants of this year’s Activate! workshop.

More information about the program is available on our website:,

2. Call for submissions: Negotiating Desire

MediaNet will be screening video works at Open Space as a part of the Institutions by Artists Convention on October 15. I by A is a meeting of

international artists, curators, critics and academics, who will “deliberate, explore and advance the common interests of artist-run centres

collectives and cultures, creating a catalyst for new as well as divergent practices and perspectives.” I by A takes place in Vancouver from October 12-14. Delegates will be coming to Victoria for October 15.

Negotiating Desire looks at how we deal with the things that we want most – a state of mind, a relationship, an object, a place or time – and how we rationalize these desires in the face of our current realities. The screening will examine desires achieved, desires thwarted and the compromises that we all make.

The videos should be no more than 10mins in length, and do not need to be new works. Please send submissions to MediaNet at #110, 2750 Quadra St., V8T 4E8 no later than October 1.

OPEN CINEMA  Celebrates its 10th Season with the Canadian Premiere screening of Symphony of the Soil!

Symphony of the Soil explores the complexity and mystery of soil. Using a captivating mix of art and science, the film shows that

soil is a complex living organism, the very foundation of life on earth. By treating the soil properly, we can help solve some of our most

pressing environmental problems. The documentary was filmed on four continents, and contains interviews with some of the most esteemed

scientists, farmers and activists.

Advance tickets to the event are available through Eventbrite

Buy tickets early to avoid disappointment! Only a limited number will be available at the door.

The event features a post-screening discussion with filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia, Robin Tunnicliffe, organic farmer and author of All the Dirt: Reflections on Organic Farming, and Heidi Hermary, founder of Society of Organic Urban Lancare (SOUL), Gaia College. The discussion will be moderated by Alan Dolan, Facilitator and Communications Consultant.

As a new component of OPEN CINEMA’s events, the discussion will be live-streemed to OPEN CINEMA’s website on our live page and there will be a moderated Twitter chat, which can be followed by following #OCchat

Friday September 28, 2012

The Slide Room Gallery 2549 Quadra Street, Victoria

On September 28, 2012, SOUNDS IN A ROOM, Victoria’s only monthly program of experimental new music, will present a solo performance by Lance Austin Olsen and the second in our RE_MOTE series.

Lance Austin Olsen is already well-known as one of Victoria’s premier contemporary painters but, since 2001, he has been simultaneously developing a considerable body of work in sound installation and performance. His solo and collaborative recordings have won international praise for their distinct style, featuring Olsen attacking a small trainer guitar with a variety of found objects. Olsen approaches his improvised performances in the same manner as his painting – unpredictable gestures framed by open space.

Also part of the evening will be the second in our RE_MOTE series, which invites established contemporary musicians from various parts of the world to provide us with a 15min improvisation documented on video. These documents are paired together and projected simultaneously to create a new composition built from chance. The artists names remain a secret until the night of the projection.

Join us for an exciting evening of concerts and discussion! Admission is free.

Movie Monday

6:30 pm Monday 1 Oct, 2012

Monsieur Lazhar, 94 min, 2011

A French Canadian film about a teacher who steps in after a previous teacher killed herself during recess at an elementary school. The kids know what happened but no one is talking about it in open terms. The Algerian replacement teacher has his own secret and past trauma, and sees a need to address the children’s emotional needs gently but more directly. It’s nicely done, very touching. Multiple award winner and Canada’s Oscar contender.

6:30 pm Monday 8 Oct 2012

The Descendants, 110 min, 2011

Set in Hawaii, The Descendants is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. He now has to step up to parenting a couple of daughters he doesn’t really know, a beset with challenges of deciding the future of a large piece of family land and a surprising, unwelcome revelation. “A thoroughly rewarding assembled-for-adults dramedy that benefits immensely from both its island locale and one of George Clooney’s finest performances.” R trailer
